The curriculum at Pennine Way Junior Academy is designed to provide a broad, balanced and rich education that meets the needs of all pupils. Our curriculum gives children the skills, knowledge and understanding to prepare them for their future lives. It ensures that academic success, creativity and problem solving, reliability, responsibility and resilience, as well as physical development, well-being and mental health are key elements that support the development of the whole child and promote a positive attitude to learning. This is delivered through high quality teaching and an extensive range of extra-curricular opportunities including a variety of day and residential visits.
Implementation and Impact:
Although we deliver The National Curriculum in discrete subject areas, we also offer a wealth of opportunities for cross-curricular learning. Whilst English and Mathematics form an integral part of our curriculum, we ensure that all subject areas are valued and allocate sufficient time within each term to guarantee full coverage of key knowledge and skills. Computing is also a key area within the curriculum as it prepares our pupils for life in the modern world alongside ensuring that they fully understand how to be safe and responsible users of the internet and digital technology. The spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our pupils and their understanding of the key British values of our society is a thread that is woven throughout the curriculum.
(More detailed information on individual subject areas can be found in the curriculum offers below)
Specialist teachers in Physical Education, Music and French ensure that these areas of the curriculum are taught with particular expertise. Although we strive towards sporting excellence, participation and enjoyment are fundamental to our ethos. In addition, music and the arts are key components of our curriculum; our Gold Arts Mark is a testament to this.
Subject leaders are passionate about their curriculum areas and the organisation of theme days/weeks, visiting speakers and visits all contribute to our broad and balanced curriculum offer and enrich the children’s learning.
Opportunity and enjoyment are at the heart of the curriculum offered here at Pennine Way and it is our intention that all of our pupils leave the primary phase of their education with a thirst for learning. Our aim is for pupils’ experiences at Pennine Way to positively influence the choices they make in the future and instil the ambition and aspiration to be the best they can be.
