Pupil Premium
What is Pupil Premium?
Each year, the school receives money in connection with the number of children who receive Free School Meals (FSM). Pupil Premium is additional funding for publicly funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils and close the gap between them and their peers. The amount received is dependent on the number of children who are eligible and have claimed for free school meals at any time in the last six years. All schools are required to report on the amount of funding and how this is being used.
For the academic year 2024-2025, schools will receive a funding allocation of £1480 per child for primary-aged pupils who are eligible to free school meals or have been eligible in the last 6 years and £2570 for children who have previously been in care or are currently Looked After by the Local Authority.
How does it work?
Pupil premium is not a personal budget for individual pupils, and schools do not have to spend pupil premium so that it solely benefits pupils who meet the funding criteria. Each school can decide the most appropriate way to spend their pupil premium allocation. Generally, the spending fits into one of the 3 following categories:
Teaching
For example:
- training and professional development for teachers and support staff
- recruitment and retention
- investing in extra classroom support
Targeted Academic Support
For example:
- one-to-one intervention
- small group intervention
Wider Approaches
For example:
- breakfast club
- social-emotional interventions
- extra-curricular opportunities
- help with the cost of educational trips or visits
Why does it matter to us?
As a school, over one third of our pupils are currently classed as ‘disadvantaged’. This makes our commitment to supporting improved outcomes for disadvantaged pupils even more important. We have a whole school ethos of ‘opportunity and ambition for all’ and we aim to ensure that this is the case for all of our pupils, regardless of their backgrounds. Helping all children to love learning is a key part of this, alongside providing a wealth of wider opportunities.
